Formulator’s Queries, We Answered
1. What is the CAS number and INCI name of this chemical?
CAS number: 532-32-1.
INCI name: Sodium Benzoate.
2. What is sodium benzoate used for in personal-care products?
Sodium benzoate is primarily used as a water-soluble preservative to inhibit growth of bacteria, yeast and some molds in aqueous and partly aqueous cosmetic formulations (e.g., gels, shampoos, rinse-off products, creams when in suitable systems). It’s often selected for “mild / low-toxicity” preservative systems or in combination with other preservatives to broaden activity.
3. What typical usage levels are recommended in cosmetics?
Typical final product usage is in the range of 0.1–2.5%, depending on formula type and local regulation; for EU rinse-off products a commonly cited regulatory maximum is 2.5% (see Q6). In practice formulators most often use 0.5–1.0% in many leave-on and rinse-off systems when pH and co-preservatives are appropriate.
4. At what pH is sodium benzoate most effective?
Sodium benzoate’s antimicrobial action depends on conversion to benzoic acid (the active form). It is most effective at acidic pH (≈2.5–4.0) — activity falls as pH rises because less benzoic acid is present. Formulators must check final product pH to ensure preservative efficacy.
5. Labeling & claims
Label as Sodium Benzoate (INCI). Avoid misleading consumer claims about “no preservatives” or implying hazard where legislation prohibits denigrating approved ingredients (EU practice discourages unfair negative claims). Follow local labeling law for ingredient disclosure.
